We are inviting YOU to share your story.

Over the past twenty years African Americans in Seattle have spread out from our roots in the Central District. Now we live all over King County. How does this decentralization affect our ability to create and maintain black community?

We would love to talk to you if:

  1. You are African American and you used to live in the Central District when it was the center of the African American community, but now you live somewhere else in King County.
  2. You are new to the Seattle area and are seeking out black community.
  3. You are an African American who lives outside of the Central District but your community life (church, businesses you frequent, etc) is based in the Central District.
  4. You are African American living in the greater Seattle area and you have strong opinions on this subject.

We are creating a series of short documentary videos and will screen them at a community forum this spring. Your contribution will help make the videos and the community forum richer.

To contribute your story call our Community Story Line at (253) 642-7672 by March 17th. Please leave your name and a number where we can reach you, in case we have follow up questions. Your message may be included in the video, but we will edit out your contact information.

Here are some questions to think about. Answer as many as you like, or say something else we forgot to ask.

  1. How do you define your community? Where do you go to feel comfortable, like you’re with your people? How important is ethnic/racial identity to you in defining and forming community?
  2. The black community used to be anchored in the Central District. Where are black people creating community today – inside and outside of the CD?
  3. What’s new and unexpected about community life where you live now that you like? What don’t you like about it?
  4. How important do you think it is that black people live and work close to one another to maintain a sense of community? How are you maintaining your community ties when black people are so spread out around here?

Call the Community Story Line at (253) 642-7672 before March 17.
